Description

Cyclic AMP-dependent transcription factor ATF-3 (UniProt P18847, also known as Activating transcription factor 3, cAMP-dependent transcription factor ATF-3) is encoded by the ATF3 gene (Gene ID 467) in human. ATF-3 belongs to the ATF/cAMP-responsive element-binding protein family of basic leucine zipper-type transcription factors. ATF-3 is markedly induced and functions as either a transcriptional activator or repressor in response to LPS, cytokines, hormones, DNA damage, and ER stress in various cell types. ATF3 plays key roles in atherosclerosis and hyperlipidemia, and is reported to negatively regulate the differentiation of adipocyte, chondrocyte, and osteoblast. ATF-3 dysfunction is closely related to various inflammatory diseases and cancer.
