Description
MRP8/ABCC11 is an interesting protein important in a wide range of cellular processes from bile acid metabolism to ear wax secretion. MRP8/ABCC11 is involved in the ATP-dependent uptake of lipophilic anions, steroid sulfates and various bile acids and plays roles in cAMP and cGMP metabolism as well. MRP8/ABCC11 is a member of the ABC transporter superfamily of proteins. MRP8/ABCC11 is a membrane bound protein and is widely expressed except in kidney, spleen and colon. MRP8/ABCC11 is also expressed in many cancers including breast cancer where it serves as a conformational marker. Interestingly, earwax is a Mendelian trait and can be wet or dry. The Arg-184 allele of MRP8/ABCC11 gene is responsible for dry ear wax (cerumen).
