Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions, including increased blood pressure, elevated insulin levels, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol levels. Key features of metabolic syndrome include insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and central obesity-all of which are risk factors for atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, and even premature death. Adults with metabolic syndrome present a low-grade inflammation, whose link with obesity may be a production of pro- and anti-inflammatory factors.
