Description

Sodium-coupled neutral amino acid transporter 2 (UniProt: Q9JHE5, also known as Amino acid transporter A2, Solute carrier family 38 member 2, System A amino acid transporter 2, System A transporter 1, System N amino acid transporter 2) is encoded by the Scl38a2 (also known as Ata2, Sa1, Sat2, Snat2) gene (Gene ID: 29642) in rat. Sodium-coupled neutral amino acid transporter 2 is a multi-pass membrane protein that functions as a sodium-dependent amino acid transporter and mediates the saturable, pH-sensitive and electrogenic cotransport of neutral amino acids and sodium ions with a stoichiometry of 1:1. It may also function in the transport of amino acids at the blood-brain barrier and in the supply of maternal nutrients to the fetus through the placenta. Its transport action is reported to be inhibited by N-methyl-D-glucamine and choline. It is enriched in the somatodendritic compartment of neurons and is also detected at the axonal shaft, but is excluded from the nerve terminal. It is also expressed in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. Its levels are up-regulated upon amino acid deprivation that results from increased transcription and protein stabilization.
