Description
Alanine metabolism known also as Glucose-Alanine cycle or Cahill cycle is the process in which muscles utilize amino acids for their energetic needs.. , Glutamate and Pyruvate are transformed into Alanine and alpha-ketoglutarate in the muscle, through the actions of Alanine aminotransferase (AST) and Pyridoxal Phosphate.. ,The alpha-ketoglutarate transforms to Glutamate through the actions of glutamate dehydrogenase with an addition of ammonia. But, in this pathway, the ammonia is excluded from the muscles.. ,The Alanine passes through the blood stream and into the liver. In the liver, the Alanine and a-ketoglutarate transform to Pyruvate and Glutamate by the actions of Alanine aminotransferase (AST).. ,The Pyruvate transforms to glucose by the Cori cycle (Gluconeogenesis) and returns to the muscle from the blood stream.
