Description
Cytochrome P450 2J2 (UniProt: P51589, also known as EC:1.14.14.1, Arachidonic acid epoxygenase, CYPIIJ2) is encoded by the CYP2J2 gene (Gene ID: 1573) in human. Cytochrome P450 2J2 is an endoplasmic reticulum microsomal enzyme that metabolizes arachidonic acid predominantly via a NADPH-dependent olefin epoxidation to all four regioisomeric cis-epoxyeicosatrienoic acids. It is responsible for the epoxidation of endogenous cardiac arachidonic acid pools. It is highly expressed in heart and is present at lower levels in liver, ileum, jejunum, colon, and kidney. It is reported to activate the nuclear peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR alpha) and hence plays a role in lipid metabolism and inflammation. Overexpression of CYP2J2 in vivo is shown to reverse several pathological processes in animals, including hypertension, other cardiovascular pathologies, and insulin resistance.
