Description

Semaphorin-4A (UniProt Q9H3S1, also known as Sema B, Semaphorin-B) is encoded by the SEMA4A (also known as CORD10, RP35, SEMAB, SEMB) gene (ORP UNQ783/PRO1317, Gene ID 64218) in human. Semaphorin-4A is a membrane-type class IV semaphorin originally characterized for its role in axon guidance during neural development, Semaphorin-4A also plays a role in Th cells activation and the differentiation of Th1 and Th17 cells. In addition Semaphorin-4A is involved in angiogenesis and endothelial cells migration by modulating VEGF signaling. Consistent with its important role in Th cells, Semaphorin-4A level is reported to be elevated in the serum samples from patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) respond poorly to interferon-beta (IFN-beta) therapy. Semaphorin-4A neutralizing antibodies are reported to inhibit antigen-specific T cell generation and ameliorate experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of MS.
