Description
The murine gene Nup98 (Gene ID 269966, also known as AI849286, 4732457F17) encodes the 1816-amino acid nuclear pore complex protein Nup98-Nup96 (UniProt Q6PFD9), which is posttranslationally autocleaved between aa 800 and 801 to form Nup98 (aa 1-800) and Nup96 (aa 801-1816). The nuclear pore complex (NPC) acts as a passageway for nucleocytoplasmic transport. The core structure of the NPC is maintained by the Nup93-205 complex sandwiched between the supporting structures of the Nup107-160 complex on the nuclear and cytoplasmic faces of the pore. Nup96 is a component of the Nup107-160 complex, the largest subunit of the NPC. Nup96 knockout is reported to be fatal in mice and Nup96(+/-) mice with low levels of Nup96 display impaired immune response and are highly susceptible to viral infection.
