In the female, LH stimulates synthesis of progesterone in the ovaries, release of estrogen from Graafian follicles, induction of ovulation, and formation of the corpus luteum. In the male, LH stimulates testosterone secretion by the testes. Biological specificity has been attributed to the beta-chain.
