Description

NF-kappaB (nuclear factor kappa B) is a transcription factor that plays a regulatory role in several physiological and pathological processes. The NF-kappaB pathway can be activated by numerous stimuli, including inflammatory cytokines, virus, bacteria, UV radiation, genotoxic stress, DNA damage, oxidative stress, etc. The IkBalpha/NF-kappaB complex is tightly regulated by both phosphorylation and ubiquitination. Phosphorylation and ubiquitination of IkappaBalpha leads to its degradation and subsequent release of phosphorylated NF-kappaB to the nucleus. Greater than 100 target genes, including cytokines, cyclins, p21, Bcl-2, and c-Myc are known to be transcribed by NF-kB.
