Description
Sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase subunit alpha-3 (UniProt: P06687, also known as EC: 3.6.3.9, Na(+)/K(+) ATPase alpha-3 subunit, Na(+)/K(+) ATPase alpha(III) subunit, Sodium pump subunit alpha-3) is encoded by the Atp1a3 gene (Gene ID: 24213) in rat. Sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase subunit alpha-3 is a multi-pass membrane protein that is exclusive to the brain tissue and is highly expressed in cell bodies and projections of hippocampus. It is responsible for establishing and maintaining the electrochemical gradients of sodium and potassium ions across the plasma membrane. These gradients are essential for osmoregulation, for sodium-coupled transport of a variety of organic and inorganic molecules, and for electrical excitability of nerve and muscle. Sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase subunit alpha-3 is composed of two subunits, a large catalytic subunit (alpha) and a smaller glycoprotein subunit (beta). The catalytic component catalyzes the hydrolysis of ATP coupled with the exchange of sodium and potassium ions across the plasma membrane. Reduced levels of neuronal sodium/ potassium ATPase activity in ATP1A3 heterozygous mice increases their susceptibility to depression-like endophenotypes by chronic variable stress.
