Black Mass CRMs
Reference materials for the recovery and recycling of battery materials
When end-of-life lithium-ion batteries are shredded and processed, a fine, dense powder is produced, known as “black mass". Valuable metals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese and copper can be recovered from black mass and reused in new batteries.
Starting in 2028, new EU battery regulation (BattVO/2023/1542) requires manufacturers to use increasing minimum proportions of recycled materials (cobalt, lead, lithium and nickel) when producing new batteries for sale on the EU market. This regulation aims to reduce the environmental impact of battery production by decreasing the use of virgin materials.
When analyzing black mass for composition and quality, accurate results are crucial to trust along the supply chain and to ensure high quality raw materials for the production of new batteries.
No matter where you stand in the battery recycling supply chain, Labmix24 offers a growing selection of reference materials including matrix-matched materials and inorganic solutions to support the elemental analysis and quality control of black mass. You’ll find reference materials from trusted manufacturers such as OREAS/AnalytiChem, BAM and more. These CRMs are suitable for XRF, ICP-OES, ICP-MS and other methods typically used in the analysis of battery materials.
