A lipophilic, water-soluble styrylpyridinium red fluoroprobe that is useful for staining active recycling synaptic vesicles. Also useful in studying endocytosis and identifying cell membrane boundaries. The compound is non-fluorescent in aqueous solution but becomes fluorescent when incorporated into the plasma membrane. Reversible, photostable, and does not diffuse out of internalized vesicles.
